Travelling to Tampere

Tampere can be reached from abroad either by flying directly to Pirkkala Airport, which is close to Tampere but quite a small airport with few flights, or flying to Helsinki-Vantaa Airport and then traveling to Tampere by train which takes approximately 1 h 45 min to 2 h 15 min.

If you fly to Helsinki-Vantaa Airport, follow these steps to get to Tampere:

1. Check the train schedules and buy tickets in advance

You can find the train schedules and buy the tickets at https://www.vr.fi/en. Select the correct stations (e.g., Helsinki Airport – Tampere or Tampere – Helsinki Airport) and you will see all train options.

Note that the train ticket prices get higher the closer they are booked to the trip. Therefore, it might be wise to buy the tickets right after you have your flight tickets.

2. Take the commuter train from Helsinki Airport to Tikkurila station

Once arrived at Helsinki Airport, follow the signs that guide you to the underground train station. You will find that there are commuter trains that leave from the station every 10-20 min.

Catch a commuter train to Helsinki via Tikkurila and take off at Tikkurila station. The fast trains to Tampere leave from there.

3. Catch the train connection from Tikkurila station to Tampere city center

The trains from Tikkurila to Tampere leave every 20-40 min and from Tikkurila to Tampere, it takes from 1,5 to 2 hours depending on the train.
