Tell me something about yourself?
My name is Kai Gu. I was born and raised in Hangzhou, China. I received my joint bachelor’s degree in mechatronics at Shanghai Tongji University, China, and FH Aachen and my Master’s degree in Electrical engineering at TU Berlin, Germany.
I have worked as a research assistant in Global Energy Interconnection Research Institute Europe GmbH. The topic of collaborative research with TU Berlin was about the fault detection of high voltage grids by means of digital signal processing and machine learning.
I am interested in digital image processing and computer vision. Also, I have some academic training in machine learning.
Why did you apply to the PLENOPTIMA project?
I am a fan of video gaming, VR/AR applications, and 3D CG content. I believe playing is a great part of people’s daily recreational activities. The PLENOPTIMA project offers me the opportunity to get involved in the related research from the perspective of plenoptic imaging. I do believe my interdisciplinary academic experience is well suited to the project.
What kind of expectations do you have for your research project and the upcoming network training?
I expect that the outcome of our work can provide the community with powerful theory and practical tools for 3D immersive visual content production. The VR/AR content maker and industrial application as well as customers can benefit from an efficient yet accurate spherical light field representation and view synthesis algorithm that enables 6DOF navigation in the scene. I hope I will have the opportunity to get access to cutting-edge researches, and the commercialization of research results. I would also like to cooperate with researchers of related or different fields.
Kai works as Early Stage Researcher at the French Institute for Research in Computer Science and Automation (Inria), France, and his research topic is “Spherical light field representation and reconstruction from omnidirectional imagery”.
