Meet our Early Stage Researchers: ESR8 Fatemeh Ghorbani

Tell me something about yourself?

My name is Fatemeh. I was born on the 26th of July 1994 in the north of Iran, Rasht. I graduated from the University of Guilan in 2016 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering. After that, I started my graduate study in Mechatronics Engineering at K. N. Toosi University of Technology. Losing my grandmother because of Alzheimer’s disease inspired me to study for my master’s thesis how to design intelligent assistive systems based on the latest computer vision techniques. I also have experience in designing AR games for helping individuals with cognitive impairments.

Why did you apply to the PLENOPTIMA project?

After finishing my graduate research, I was delighted at first but soon realized that I had done almost nothing in the fast-moving world of computer vision. Therefore, I decided to continue my education in Ph.D. I have been enthusiastic about the PLENOPTIMA project because it is perfectly aligned with my research interest and experience. Moreover, the PLENOPTIMA network is well-connected to famous companies and prestigious universities around Europe. So, I hope my colleagues in the network can greatly help me to not only achieve but also exceed my full potential.

What kind of expectations do you have for your research project and the upcoming network training?

There are many ongoing challenges in the XR research field. In this Ph.D. position, I expect to create more photorealistic representations of users’ faces in XR applications to increase the naturalness within the environment. I also expect the results of this project to have a profound impact on the quality of service provided for the end-user in XR and think its range of applications could be extended from teleconferencing to healthcare systems.

What was your favorite subject at school when you were a kid?

My favorite course was mathematics from the first grade at school. I used to define knotty problems and then try to solve them from scratch. It was really funny and yet serious for me.

What hobbies do you have?

I have a variety of hobbies. I do like playing chess, reading books, and learning musical instruments. These can bring a good change in my life and make me feel fulfilled.

Fatemeh works as Early Stage Researcher at Technische Universität Berlin (TUB), Germany, and her research topic is “Headset Removal for Gaze Contact in XR Applications“.
